China White. The name of the heroin that killed Darby Crash. Sometime in early 1981, when the Southern California hardcore punk scene was in it’s earliest days, out of Huntington Beach, Orange County came the notorious China White. Infamous for violent gigs and their blazing hardcore punk anthems with a curious blend of metal-riffage, China White were among the earliest bands in the emerging HC scene along with Black Flag, Fear, The Circle Jerks, The Minutemen and various others. The majority of the bands coming out of Huntington Beach were labeled as violent "beach punks". Along with T.S.O.L., China White contributed to this image. Describing themselves as a "black-leather band" it wasn’t uncommon for fights and brawls to erupt at their shows. China White played out in the Southern California reigion for some time. Eventually signing to Lisa Fancher’s Frontier Records, they released their ’Danger Zone’ 12"EP sometime in 1981. A solid record with a rad front cover (of a murder scene in which Edward Culver encountered after a Fear show). The band continued to play out and were on various compilations such as New Underground’s ’Life is Ugly - So Why Not Kill Yourself?’ LP and ’Life Is Beautiful - So Why Not Eat Health Foods?’ LP. By 1985, China White had fizzled out, but the damage was done and they had left their mark on hardcore punk history. In 1993, China White reformed. Around this time, they released an album called ’Addiction’ (on Lethal Records). The lineup on this record consisted of Frank Ruffino (Guitar), Corey Stretz (Bass), Jeff Porter (Vocals), and James Lugo (Drums). They committed to no less than three tours and once again disbanded.(myspace.com/soldierinawar )

The Flyboys were a punk rock group from Los Angeles formed by John Curry- (Jon Boy) guitar/vocals, David Wilson (David Way) Bass/Vocals and Dennis Walsh (Denny Drummond) on Drums. Scott Lasken (Scott Towels) joined on Bass soon thereafter, causing Wilson to switch to Keyboards.
This was the line up that started to play Hollywood clubs in 1977 but was derailed by Wilson's death in an auto accident in 1978 shortly after a show sponsored by Brendan Mullen of The Masque at Baces Hall supporting the Go Go's and The Avengers.
The group had recently released a color vinyl single on their own FlyGuy Records. Crayon Word b/w Square City was one of the first self-released singles in the growing LA punk rock scene and quickly sold out the 1000 copies pressed.
Tim Sincavage (Thames) was later added to the line up on guitar and Curry began splitting his duties between guitar and Keyboards as well as singing the majority of the songs.
This line up recorded the first ever release for Frontier Records in 1980, a seven song EP titled 'Flyboys' that included proto-type punk/pop tunes such as "I Couldn't Tell" and "Dear John" as well as the Flyboys Theme Song, a surf inspired rave up that was coved by Jody Foster's Army.(JFA)
The group splintered in 1981, Curry spent time in LA based band The Plugz, writing the music for the title track to their second album, 'Better Luck', although he left the band shortly before the recording of the album to form Choir Invisible with Lasken and Sincavage.
The latter two had submitted a demo with a different singer to Frontier as a possible release but Fancher would only release a record if Curry returned to the fold. She also found drummer, Danny Benair formally of the Quick and later the drummer in The Three o'Clock and Choir Invisible was born.
The Flyboys reunited in 2003 for the LA Weekly's 25th Anniversary Party and again in 2007 for the release Party for Brendan's Mullan's book on the seminal Punk rock Club, The Masque.(Wiki)
Although China White rarely comes to the top of anyone's head when thinking about the early 80's California punk scene, they are one of the best bands to emerge from it(and this includes such great bands as DI, TSOL, Circle Jerks, Adolescents, Social Distortion, etc.) The reason why they are so underrated is because they only released one album, and it is all but impossible to find, I can't beleive Amazon carries it. The album, entitled Dangerzone, is one of the classic albums of this era, right along with Group Sex by the Circle Jerks and Damaged by Black Flag, but it is better than either. The music is very fast, but not so much so that you can't keep up with the beat, and the vocals sound a little like Keith Morris. Every song is a classic, there are no boring parts to this album. The Flyboys ep is included, and even though it is a little slower and not quite as good, it has great melodies and it compliments the China White album well. Be warned-all of the other China White releases you will find are from the re-formed, post-1991 band, which are nowhere near as good and sound completely different. This is the one to own.
The Flyboys 1980 self-titled EP combined with China White's 1981 'Dangerzone' EP together on one CD released on Frontier, 1993. Ripped separately ~224/320kbs Mp3 with tags & scans. Enjoy!
